5 Things Every South African Business Website Must Have (And Most Are Missing)

Flat-lay of five essentials on golden tiles: a phone with contact details, padlock, map pin, camera and speech bubble

Not all websites are created equal. Some websites actively bring in customers, answer their questions, build trust, and convert browsers into buyers. Others sit on the internet looking vaguely professional while doing absolutely nothing for the business. The difference often comes down to a handful of specific features, features that are either present or absent. Here are the 5 things every South African business website absolutely must have in 2026.

  1. A Clear Headline That Explains What You Do

Within 3–5 seconds of landing on your website, a visitor must be able to answer three questions:

  • What does this business do?
  • Who do they serve?
  • Am I in the right place?

If your homepage headline says ‘Welcome to our website’ or just shows your business name, you’ve already failed this test. Generic headlines send visitors away.

A strong headline sounds like: ‘Affordable catering for Cape Town events and functions’ or ‘Johannesburg’s most reliable plumber, available 24/7.’

Specific. Clear. Tells them exactly what they’re getting and who it’s for.

  1. Your Contact Details on Every Single Page

This sounds obvious. Yet we regularly audit South African business websites where the phone number is buried on a Contact page that requires three clicks to find, or worse, isn’t there at all.

For South African customers especially, accessibility is everything. They want to call you, WhatsApp you, or email you, and they want to do it without having to search for how.

Best practice:

  • ✅ Phone number in the header (top of every page)
  • ✅ WhatsApp click-to-chat link prominently displayed
  • ✅ Email address in the footer (bottom of every page)
  • ✅ A dedicated Contact page with a form, map, and all contact methods

Make it impossible for a potential customer to say: ‘I couldn’t find how to contact them.’

  1. An SSL Certificate (The Padlock)

Open your website in a browser right now. Look at the address bar. Do you see a padlock icon? If not, your website is showing visitors a ‘Not Secure’ warning, and Google is actively penalising you in search results.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security certificate that encrypts the connection between your website and visitors’ browsers. It protects data, shows the padlock icon, and tells both Google and visitors that your site is safe.

All websites hosted with Cheap Domains for Sale come with a free SSL certificate included. If your current website doesn’t have SSL, it’s time to consider switching hosting providers.

  1. Mobile-Friendly Design

Most South Africans access the internet primarily on their mobile phones. Not laptops. Not desktop computers. Phones.

If your website is not optimised for mobile viewing, if text is tiny, images are cut off, buttons are too small to tap, and the layout looks broken on a smartphone screen, you are losing the majority of your potential visitors before they even read a word of your content.

WordPress themes (website designs) are almost all mobile-responsive by default, they automatically adjust to look good on any screen size. This is one of the reasons we recommend WordPress so strongly for South African small businesses.

  1. A Clear Call to Action on Every Page

Every page on your website should have one primary goal, and it should tell visitors exactly what to do to take the next step.

Examples:

  • A plumber’s website: ‘Call us now for a free quote, available 24/7’
  • A restaurant: ‘Book your table here’ (with a booking link)
  • A freelancer: ‘See my portfolio and request a quote’
  • An online store: ‘Shop now and get free delivery on orders over R500’

Without a clear call to action, visitors read your website, think ‘this looks good,’ and then… close the tab. Your website should never leave a potential customer wondering what to do next.

Bonus: Fast Loading Speed

We’ll write a dedicated post on website speed, but it deserves a mention here: if your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, research consistently shows that more than half your visitors will leave before it finishes loading.

Hosting delivered through a South African edge network (as we provide) is one of the most impactful things you can do for your website speed. We’ll cover the others in an upcoming post.
