GoDaddy is the world’s biggest registrar, and for South Africans it comes with three built-in costs: dollar-linked pricing, the promo-then-renewal cycle, and support on someone else’s clock. None of that makes it a bad company, it makes it a company priced and built for a different market. Here’s what to check before renewing there, and what a local alternative looks like.
Cost 1: Your domain price rides the exchange rate
Global registrars price in dollars; the rand figure you see is a conversion. When the rand weakens, and over any five-year stretch, it has, your renewal quietly rises with it. You’re not just buying a domain; you’re taking a small currency position, annually, forever.
Rand pricing removes the variable entirely: R99 this year, R99 at renewal, regardless of what the currency does.
Cost 2: The promo-then-renewal cycle
The global-registrar playbook leads with an aggressive first-year promotion and recovers it at renewal, the exact pattern we covered in the 2026 price guide. Nothing hidden about it; the renewal price is disclosed. But if you registered during a promo and haven’t looked at your renewal invoice lately, look. That number, times every year you stay, is the real price. A concrete example from our 8 August 2026 price check: GoDaddy ZA advertised .com at R1 for the first year, with a three-year commitment attached, renewing at around R369 a year afterwards, against a market renewal band of R255–R379.
Cost 3: Support in someone else’s business hours
When your email dies during a Joburg Monday morning, a global helpline’s queue is a bad place to be. Local support means someone who knows what a .co.za is, on WhatsApp, in your timezone, in your language.
And the .co.za question
Global registrars treat South African extensions as an exotic afterthought, where they offer them at all. If your customers are here, .co.za beats .com for trust and local search, and it deserves a registrar that treats it as the main event.
Moving is a five-day process, not a project
Domain transfers are standard and safe, your website and email keep working throughout:
- Get the transfer (EPP) code from your current registrar’s dashboard.
- Make sure the domain isn’t within a few weeks of expiry and is unlocked.
- Start the transfer on our transfer page and approve the confirmation email.
From then on you’re on flat rand pricing, and the renewal invoice stops being a surprise.
Unhappy where your domain lives now?
Move it to us from R79 a year. Your website stays live the whole time.
