What a WHOIS lookup on a co.za domain tells you

Every registered domain has a public record kept by its registry, for .co.za that is the ZA Central Registry (ZACR). A WHOIS lookup reads that record and shows you:

  • The registrar, which company manages the domain.
  • Key dates, when it was registered, last updated, and when it expires.
  • Its status, active, locked, or heading for expiry.
  • Name servers, a clue to where the website is hosted.

What it will not show you anymore is the owner’s personal name, email and phone number, privacy rules hide those. If you need to reach a domain owner about buying their name, WhatsApp us and we will point you to the right channel.

What is a WHOIS lookup?
A WHOIS lookup shows the public registration record of a domain: which registrar manages it, when it was registered, and when it expires. It is the standard way to check who is behind a domain, or whether one you want might be expiring soon.
Why can I not see the owner's name and email?
Privacy law. Under POPIA in South Africa (and GDPR internationally), registries hide personal contact details from public WHOIS records. You will usually see the registrar and dates, but not the person. To contact a domain owner, use the registry’s contact-relay service or ask us to help.
Can I find out when a taken domain expires?
Yes, the expiry date is one of the fields WHOIS still shows for most extensions. If the current owner does not renew, the domain eventually returns to the open market. No promises it will drop, but it costs nothing to check and set a reminder.
