How to read domain pricing like someone who has been burned before

Four things to check on any registrar’s price page, ours included:

  • The renewal price. If it is not shown next to the registration price, assume it is higher. Ask before you buy.
  • The currency. Dollar pricing means your domain cost changes with the exchange rate. Rand pricing means it does not.
  • Bundle conditions. “Free domain” almost always means “free while you keep paying for this hosting plan”. We wrote a full guide on that: what a free domain actually costs.
  • Transfer-out policy. Your domain should be yours to move, any time. With us it is.

How much does a domain cost in South Africa?
A .co.za domain costs R99 a year with us. Across the SA market, .co.za prices typically range from about R49 to R197 a year depending on the registrar, and some advertise a cheap first year, then charge a much higher renewal. Always check both prices before you buy.
Why do some registrars advertise domains for almost nothing?
The classic move is a loss-leader: a very cheap or free first year, with the real price hidden in the renewal. The domain also often comes locked into a hosting bundle. There is nothing illegal about it, but you should know the full-term cost before you commit. Our renewal price is the same as our registration price.
Is a more expensive domain better?
No. A .co.za registered at R99 is exactly the same domain as one registered at R150, same registry, same ownership rights, same performance. You are paying for the registrar’s overheads and margins, not a better product. Spend the difference on your website instead.
Do domain prices change?
Registry wholesale fees adjust occasionally, and registrars reprice when they do. When our prices change we publish the new price here first and it only applies from your next renewal, never mid-term. This page is our public price list, updated whenever pricing changes.
