Search for a free domain in South Africa and you will find plenty of offers. They are not scams, but “free” is doing some heavy lifting in those adverts. Here is how the maths actually works, so you can decide with your eyes open.

How free domain offers work

No registrar can give domains away, the registry charges them a wholesale fee for every single one. So a “free domain” is always a bundle: the domain fee is waived when you buy something bigger, almost always a hosting plan, almost always billed for a year upfront.

The business logic is simple: absorb a small domain cost to win a larger hosting sale. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you evaluate the whole bundle, not the word “free”.

The three conditions to check before you take one

• The commitment. “Free domain” usually means “with an annual hosting plan”. If the hosting costs more than the hosting you would otherwise choose, the free domain saved you R99 and cost you more than that.
• The renewal price. The domain is free in year one. Year two it renews at the registrar’s standalone rate, check that number before signing. If it is not published anywhere obvious, that tells you something too.
• The ownership. Confirm the domain is registered in your name, not the provider’s. A free domain registered to someone else is not your domain, it is a leash.

The honest comparison
