The difference between a domain and hosting trips up almost everyone getting online for the first time, because providers talk about them like you were born knowing. Here it is in one line: your domain is the address, your hosting is the plot of land the house stands on.

The plot and house analogy

Imagine building a home:

  • The domain is your address. 15 Vilakazi Street, or online, yourbusiness.co.za. It tells people where to find you. On its own, it is just a name pointing at an empty plot.
  • Hosting is the plot of land. The server space where your actual website, pages, photos, product lists, physically lives.
  • The website is the house. What you build on the plot, and what visitors actually see when they arrive at the address.

You need all three for a working website. You can buy them at different times, and you should always buy the address first, because addresses are unique and someone else can take yours.
